Five-year professorship, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen

The Seminar for East Asian Studies at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen invites applications for a five-year professorship (classification W2, non-tenure track) in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The position will begin 01 April 2024. The successful candidate must demonstrate expertise in this field. Possible areas of specialization include teaching Chinese as a foreign language with an emphasis on pedagogy; sinology with an emphasis on linguistics; literary studies; didactics; or linguistics with an emphasis on Chinese. The successful candidate must have completed a PhD with an excellent denomination and demonstrated research excellence through scholarly publications at a level compatible with a W2-level professorship.

Relevant experience in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language is a must, as is an excellent command of Mandarin.

The successful candidate should be able to conduct research in Göttingen that links the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to broader concepts of multilingualism and
multiculturalism in the context of the German educational system. The research should also position itself in relation to contemporary developments in foreign language  instruction.

The successful candidate will be expected to cooperate closely with all relevant educational departments, the institutes and professors working in China-related fields, and the Center for Modern East Asian Studies. We are looking for a team player who will create synergies at the University of Göttingen while supporting the existing partnerships with institutions of higher education in China. The Confucius Institute is jointly funded by The University of Manchester and Beijing Normal University, China with the aim to promote Chinese language and cultural exchange in the North West of England. This is a full-time fixed term (10 months) role. The University currently operates a hybrid work model and this role is expected to work  four days in the office and one day from home. This post is for maternity cover, starting from 15 June 2023 to 14 April 2024.

You will be expected to provide academic leadership for the Chinese language teaching and delivery at the Confucius Institute. The role is expected to supervise and support colleagues in the teaching team consisting of both local and seconded staff in conjunction with the Chinese Director. Other main duties include the teaching of Chinese courses at a range of levels and/or course types and any administrative duties associated with teaching. Most teaching takes place in the evening and at the weekend. All teaching staff are encouraged to be innovative in their teaching, contribute to materials/course development, and keep up-to-date with the latest developments in FLT.

You will need relevant experience in Chinese language teaching at tertiary level, preferably in the UK, a master degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) or PGCE. Full proficiency in Chinese and English, and strong cross-cultural communication are essential to the role. You need to demonstrate ability and experience in developing new courses, new learning materials and using e-learning technologies in delivering language programmes.
